NY Rangers coach Peter Laviolette explained why he sent K’Andre Miller back on the ice after a costly turnover. Miller’s mistake led to the game-tying goal by Thomas Harley at 17:21 of the third period. Harley intercepted Miller’s pass and scored from the right circle, tying the game at 4-4.
After the game, Laviolette addressed his decision:
“There’s things that go wrong on every goal — and so there was definitely things that we could have done better inside of that goal as well. There’s a couple of breakdowns on that particular instance.”
Miller has had a challenging season, with two goals, five assists and a m-6 rating in 34 games. His performances have been strong in wins but inconsistent in losses.
The Dallas Stars came back from three goals down to defeat the Rangers 5-4 in overtime. Jamie Benn scored the winning goal on a power play in the extra period.
Peter Laviolette expressed frustration after his NY Rangers' overtime loss, pointing to defensive mistakes.
"I mean you're up, you're up, you come out of the gates, you're up 3-0 at home, you don't win a hockey game." Laviolette said, " You did enough wrong defensively to not be happy with it. So the first period, I thought we just gave up way too much off the rush."
"Just most of it came from the offensive zone, a couple of puck decisions, but offensive zone, we just put ourselves on the wrong side of everything in the first period. 3-1 power play goal, 3-2, so the game evens up after that point."
Miller’s turnover was costly, but Laviolette’s trust in him shows his importance to the Rangers’ defense.
