The Florida Panthers beat the New York Rangers 5-3 at Amerant Bank Arena on Monday. After the game, Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette acknowledged that his team’s efforts fell short of securing the win.
He said that while his players did some things right, they also made mistakes that cost them the game. Laviolette stated (per Rangers reporter Mollie Walker):
“We did enough to win the game, we did enough to lose the game,” he said. “It is frustrating because you feel like you’re doing more good than you are bad out there. At the end of the day, it’s not showing on the scoreboard. That’s the business, it’s winning. It’s not good enough.”
Jesper Boqvist scored two goals, including the game-winner with just over eight minutes left. After his first shot was blocked, Boqvist scored off a rebound from his brother Adam’s shot.
Eetu Luostarinen, Mackie Samoskevich and Aleksander Barkov also scored for the Panthers, ending a two-game scoreless streak. Uvis Balinskis had two assists, and Sergei Bobrovsky made 33 saves. The win improved Florida’s record to 23-13-2. The Rangers are now 16-19-1 and have lost four straight games.
Luostarinen gave Florida a 1-0 lead in the first period, deflecting Gustav Forsling’s shot. Samoskevich then made it 2-0 with a deflection off Dmitry Kulikov’s shot.
Filip Chytil put the Rangers on the board in the second period after scoring on a rebound. Following this, Ryan Lindgren tied the game by redirecting Adam Fox’s pass into the net.
Boqvist quickly restored the Panthers' lead with a rebound goal after Carter Verhaeghe’s effort freed up the puck.
In the third period, Chris Kreider tied the game 3-3 with a power-play goal. Boqvist's second goal turned out to be the winner, and Barkov added an empty-netter to seal the win.
The New York Rangers are set to face the Boston Bruins on Thursday. The game will begin at 7 p.m. EST.
Filip Chytil's role questioned in Rangers' 5-3 loss to Panthers
New York is facing questions after their 5-3 loss against the Florida Panthers. Filip Chytil delivered a strong performance but was not used during a key moment late in the game. Coach Peter Laviolette explained the decision during the postgame media conference.
“Yeah, I mean, there's a group that we work on things and we go over things, there's a group that's been together. So, I mean, he played well,” Laviolette said. “He was supposed to be going out on the second unit and just never got the change with the person he was changing for.”
Chytil missed much of the season due to injuries and played 9:17 in Game 1 after returning.
