NHL fans have been reacting after Wayne Gretzky attended a private event hosted by Donald Trump on election night (Nov. 5). The news has sparked debate, as Trump is a polarizing figure in U.S. politics. The former president has secured a majority in the 2024 U.S. Presidential elections after a four-year gap following his first term.
NHL insider Caleb Kerney shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), saying:
"Wayne Gretzky and his wife joined their children, Paulina and Trevor, along with Paulina's husband, at a private Donald Trump event on election night. #USAElection2024."
This news has led some fans to question Gretzky’s political views and his decision to attend the event. Fans took to social media to express their thoughts on Wayne Gretzky's presence at Donald Trump's party on X.
“Of course Gretzky supports a winner,” one fan said.
“This is why Crosby is the GOAT,” another fan said.
"Wayne was the extra bit of luck we needed to win!" a fan said.
While some fans support Gretzky’s choice, others are disappointed.
"If been a huge fan of Wayne Gretzky since he entered pro hockey with the WHA with the Racers I have always idolize the man this is very disappointing to see that he would support a man with such low character," one fan said.
"Imagine being so awful a person that you'd prefer to be known as "The Hate One" instead of "The Great One," a fan said.
Other fans appreciated Gretzky.
Wayne is the Great One! Class Act - always," one fan said.
"They are frequently playing golf together for decades, especially since his daughter is married to Dustin Johnson. Wayne is always careful to not be in the picture," another fan said.
Wayne Gretzky and his family attended a Republican Party event hosted by Donald Trump
Wayne Gretzky and his family attended a Republican Party event hosted by Donald Trump during the U.S. presidential elections. The event was held at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s private resort in Palm Beach, Florida. Other notable guests included Elon Musk, Bryson DeChambeau and UFC President Dana White.
Paulina Gretzky, Wayne's daughter, posted a photo from the event on her Instagram. In the picture, she posed with her brother Trevor, husband Dustin Johnson, and their parents, Janet and Wayne. Trevor wore a Dodgers sweatshirt and a red "Make America Great Again" hat. Paulina wore a beige dress, Janet wore black, and Dustin and Wayne wore black evening suits.
The event had tight security, including bomb-sniffing dogs, and featured dinner and a private gathering to watch election updates. Mar-a-Lago, bought by Trump in the 1980s, is now a private club. The event gained attention due to the high-profile guests and its connection to the election.
