Montreal Canadiens forward Patrik Laine praised goalie Jakub Dobes for his stellar performance in the 5-4 overtime victory against the New York Rangers on Sunday.
The 23-year-old rookie goaltender recorded 23 saves, including several crucial stops during overtime, marking his fifth win in his first five NHL starts with the Canadiens.
Patrik Laine expressed confidence in Dobes, highlighting his impressive track record and ability to perform under pressure. He noted that the team has complete trust in goalies (5:17 onwards):
"Yeah, man, if you look at his track record, you could say he's pretty comfortable. The team can't get too comfortable, but he's been unreal to watch play.
"We have every trust in him, and we always know that if he's in net or Monty's in net, whatever the case is, we have a chance to win. He's made some big saves during overtime to give us the chance at the end, and yeah, it's just been fun to watch," Laine said.
Notably, it was also Jakub Dobes' first start in front of a home crowd, and he was happy to experience the moment at the packed Bell Centre.
“These guys are nuts,” said Dobes. “The best crowd I’ve ever had. I’ve said it before, it gives me goosebumps. I’m really happy to be part of this. This is the best place to play and it’s a privilege to play here every night," Dobes said of the home crowd atmosphere.
In his first five games with the Canadiens, the 23-year-old Ostrava, Czechia, native has recorded a 5-0-0 record with a 1.55 goals-against average and a .940 SV%, including one shutout win.
Patrik Laine shines for Montreal Canadiens
Patrik Laine excelled for the Montreal Canadiens, scoring the winner 3:20 into overtime to secure a thrilling 5-4 come-from-behind win.
It marked Laine's 12th goal for the Habs, and he has now accumulated 15 points in his first 18 games with the club. Notably, 10 of Laine's 12 goals have come on the power play.
"We obviously wanted to bounce back after last night (a 7-3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs). That was a tough one,” Patrik Laine said via NHL.com.
“We were giving them a couple of freebies tonight, and we knew that if we just stayed with the way we were playing we would get the results at some point.”
The Canadiens improved to 23-19-4 and moved to third in the East Wild card standings, only trailing the Ottawa Senators (24-18-4) by two points in the top spot.
The Montreal Canadiens host the Tampa Bay Lightning (25-16-3) at Bell Centre next on Tuesday. The puck drops at 7 p.m. ET.
