Patrik Laine's fiancee, Jordan Leigh, shared a heartfelt message after he received the Courage Award at the Finnish Sports Gala. Laine was recognized for his openness about mental health struggles and efforts to raise awareness in hockey.
On Kati Morton's podcast, Leigh talked about Laine's decision to enter the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program in Jan. 2024.
"Patty went into the Players Assistance Program in January of last year, and when he did, it was one of the scariest decisions that he'll say he's had to make," Leigh said. "There's a lot of pressure when you're in that space, and everybody wants you to do well. ... I think that when that happened, it really showed a lot of people that Patty is human."
She also noted how idolizing athletes can make it harder to see their personal challenges.
On Thursday, Leigh shared an Instagram story and wrote:
"Patty received the first ever "Courage Award" at the annual Finnish Sports Gala last week. So proud of who you are both on and off the ice my love."
Laine entered the program after losing his father in 2021 and facing other challenges. He completed the program in July and later requested a trade. In August, he joined the Montreal Canadiens, beginning a new chapter in his career.
Patrik Laine shared his perspective on "talking to a professional"
After a knee injury delayed his debut with Montreal, Patrik Laine returned and has been playing well. He has recorded 12 goals and five assists in 19 games this season.
At the Finnish Sports Gala, Laine spoke about the importance of seeking help.
"Having to put things aside was difficult, but it was the best decision I've ever made." Laine said, per VIASPORT.com. "Talking to a professional has completely changed my life."
Laine's initiative, "From Us to You," encourages open conversations about mental health.
