Patrik Laine made a memorable debut with the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday in a game against the New York Islanders. The Habs secured a 2-1 victory in overtime at Centre Bell Arena.
It was a special game for Laine, as it was the 26-year-old Finnish winger's debut for Montreal, who returned to the ice after nearly a year.
The Habs acquired Laine from the Columbus Blue Jackets back in August. Laine had been out for three months due to a knee injury sustained during the preseason but made a strong comeback.
In his debut game with the Canadiens, Patrik Laine made an impact, finishing with one goal, 19 shifts and 17:27 of ice time, which included 1:49 on the power play.
He recorded two shots, 1 missed shot and two hits on the night. Furthermore, he impressively won the only faceoff he took.
Patrik Laine's goal propels Habs to end their losing streak
The goal from Ptarik Laine contributed to the Montreal Canadiens' 2-1 overtime win over the New York Islanders on Tuesday. With this win, the Habs also ended their two-game losing streak.
After a goalless first period, Laine put the Canadiens up 1-0 at 7:23 of the second period. The goal was assisted by captain Nick Suzuki on the power play.
With less than a minute remaining in the period, Anders Lee equalized for the Islanders, forcing overtime. Suzuki then scored the game-winner in overtime for the Canadiens at 2:39.
"It was great,” Laine said via NHL.com. “I felt ... a little rusty, but we got the two points, so that’s really all that matters.”
I’m not going to have a bad game because I’ve worked too hard to get back to playing and putting this jersey on. So, it was better than I expected, but there’s still some work to do," he added.
Patrik Laine and the Canadiens host the Nashville Predators at Centre Bell Arena next on Thursday. The puck drops at 7 p.m. ET.
