The Boston Bruins have reportedly entered trade discussions with the Vancouver Canucks, targeting high-end centers J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson. The Spittin' Chiclets Twitter account posted about the rumor on Thursday.
The Bruins have been searching for a dominant No. 1 center since Patrice Bergeron's retirement in 2023.
With no wins in the new year, the team is eager to bolster its roster before the March 7 trade deadline. The Bruins' current struggles have been compounded by the underwhelming performance of Elias Lindholm, who signed a seven-year, $54.25 million contract in July. Lindholm has managed only 20 points in 43 games this season.
Fans took to X to react to this trade rumor. One fan doesn't believe Elias Pettersson to Boston would be a good fit.
"Petey would get chased out of Boston", noted one fan.
Meanwhile, a number of fans wondered what the Bruins could offer the Canucks in a trade.
"What in the world do they have that canucks would want ??", questioned one fan.
"What assets does BOS even have that would interest VAN outside of Pasta", reacted one fan.
"Yeah not really sure what the bruins have to offer to bring in either of those players from a current roster stand point and prospect stand point", wrote another fan.
A few more fans tried to think of possible trade packages for the Bruins.
"other than Pastrnak Boston has nothing. hard pass", wrote one fan.
"The only way Boston has a chance of getting Pettersson is if they’re giving up McAvoy", wrote another fan.
"Marchand for Miller??", questioned another X user.
The 31-year-old J.T. Miller has a relatively smaller salary cap hit ($8 million) and a shorter contract term (4 seasons). In comparison, Elias Pettersson's contract comes with a higher cap hit ($11.6 million) and a longer term, extending until the 2031-32 season.
Miller's exceptional goal-scoring ability and consistency make him an attractive option. He has posted 30-plus goals in three consecutive seasons and tallied at least 50 assists in three straight seasons. This season, Miller has accumulated 29 points (8 goals, 21 assists) despite missing 10 games.
Amid trade rumors, Boston Bruins' skid reaches six games with loss to Lightning
As trade discussions surrounding Vancouver Canucks centers J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson continue, the Boston Bruins' struggles on the ice persist.
The team suffered its sixth consecutive loss on Thursday, falling 4-1 to the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena in Florida. The Lightning dominated the game from start to finish, handing the Bruins their longest losing streak since 2015.
The Bruins' offense has been particularly stagnant during this skid, scoring one or fewer goals in four of the six losses.
With this latest defeat, the Bruins' record drops to 20-19-5, causing them to slip from third to fourth place in the Atlantic Division. The team is still searching for its first win of the new year.
