In what was nothing short of a major blockbuster deal, the Carolina Hurricanes acquired Mikko Rantanen from the Colorado Avalanche and Taylor Hall from the Chicago Blackhawks.
In return to Colorado, the Hurricanes sent Martin Necas and Jack Drury along with draft picks, while the Blackhawks received a draft pick and retained half of Rantanen's salary in exchange for Hall.
Necas and Drury have already made their debuts with the Avalanche on Saturday afternoon against the Boston Bruins, while Hall and Rantanen are expected to make their Hurricanes debut later on Saturday night when Carolina takes on the New York Islanders.
What could the potential line combinations for Saturday's Hurricanes game against the Islanders with their new players look like? Don't be surprised to see Rantanen immediately slotted onto Carolina's top line, while Hall should find himself either on the team's second or third line.
The Daily Faceoff, which puts out line combinations for each of the 32 NHL clubs on the day of their respective games, has Carolina icing the following combinations:
Forwards
Andrei Svechnikov - Sebastian Aho - Mikko Rantanen
Jordan Martinook - Jordan Staal - Seth Jarvis
Taylor Hall - Jesperi Kotkaniemi - Eric Robinson
Juha Jaaska - Jack Roslovic - Jackson Blake
Defensemen
Jaccob Slavin - Brent Burns
Dmitry Orlov - Jalen Chatfield
Shayne Gostisbehere - Sean Walker
Meanwhile, Jesper Fast, William Carrier and Tyson Jost remain unavailable as they are on Injured Reserve.
Can the Hurricanes convince Mikko Rantanen to re-sign with them this summer?
Rantanen has the chance to become one of the highest-profile unrestricted free agents in recent memory when the calendar turns to July this summer.
He's making just under $10 million a season on his contract, which expires on July 1. The prevailing belief is that he prefers to be compensated in a similar manner as Edmonton Oilers superstar forward Leon Draisaitl, who recently inked an eight-year, $112 million deal that carries a cap hit of $14 million, the highest of any player in the NHL.
The good news for the Hurricanes in their upcoming quest to re-sign Rantanen is that the NHL salary cap is expected to rise during the offseason, allowing them even more room to try and make a deal fit under the restraints.
