Ottawa Charge goaltender Emerance Maschmeyer joined in on a viral hockey trend on Sunday. She shared her own reaction to a popular meme that humorously labels goalies as “sociopaths.”
Maschmeyer took to her Instagram stories to repost the widely shared diagram which humorously assigns personality traits to players based on their positions on the ice. The image featured a hockey rink with comical labels like “Fastest Kid” and “Clueless Kid” for forwards, “Strongest Kid” and “Tallest Kid” for defenders, and reserved “Sociopath” exclusively for goalies.
“Proud to be one 🙆♀️”, Maschmeyer captioned the story.
Emerance Maschmeyer is currently playing for the Ottawa Charge in the second PWHL season. She was one of the first players signed by the team during the league’s formation in 2023, alongside Emily Clark and Brianne Jenner.
Maschmeyer has achieved significant success in her career, including a gold medal at the 2021 IIHF Women’s World Championship and another gold medal at the 2022 Winter Olympics with Team Canada.
Emerance Maschmeyer didn’t want marriage with Geneviève Lacasse to overshadow their hockey career
Last year, Emerance Maschmeyer married fellow hockey player Geneviève Lacasse. Instead of a big announcement, they posted wedding photos online. The couple started dating in 2015, but Emerance took her time before telling her family. She wanted to make sure their relationship was serious before sharing the news.
Her family was very supportive, which made a big difference. However, they hesitated to go public while they were both on the National Women’s Team. They didn’t want their relationship to overshadow their hockey careers.
“It’s certainly not easy when you and your partner share a profession. At the beginning, we had to say to each other that in many ways our relationship comes first, but we also have to put our own hockey first,” Emerance Maschmeyer wrote in a piece for Hockey Canada.
Balancing love and hockey wasn’t always easy for the two professionals. Both competed for spots on the Olympic team, which brought challenges. In 2018, Emerance didn’t make the team, while Geneviève did. The roles reversed in 2022. Maschmeyer wrote how those moments were tough, but they learned how to communicate and support each other better.
In late 2023, the couple found out they were expecting their first child and are now raising their son Beckham.
For Pride Month, Emerance shared an inspirational message about the importance of being true to oneself. She motivated others to have courage, even when it’s hard, and to focus on love and support over negativity. She said every small step toward acceptance makes a difference and helps create a better, more inclusive world.
