Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes addressed the ongoing trade speculation surrounding teammates J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson.
Reports have suggested that both players are the subject of trade talks, with some sources indicating a potential rift between them in the locker room.
Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman reported that the Canucks are open to receiving trade offers for both players, and GM Patrik Allvin has emphasized that "anything is possible."
In light of the uncertainty, Quinn Hughes said that he cannot let the trade distract him from his responsibilities on the ice. He pointed out that the team should remain focused on their goals despite the trade rumors.
“I mean ... that can't be my focus,” he said. “I can't worry about if they'll do this or they'll do that or if something crazy happens. All I can control is the controllables, and for me, that's my effort and my mindset," Hughes said.
“I don’t know why we wouldn’t be focused. I mean, it’s January. We’re right in the hunt, and there’s a lot to look forward to," he added.
Canucks coach Rick Tocchet also weighed in on the trade rumors affecting the team, noting that the leadership group is actively working to alleviate any concerns among players about potential trades.
“Coaches can help shut that down,” he said. “I've been on teams where it (trade rumours) has affected players because everybody talks about it all the time.
"So, I think that's the big thing you shut it down. This is just the world we live in, and you’ve got to block it out. I mean, everybody goes through it. Every team has it.”
J.T. Miller is inked to a seven-year, $56 million contract with the Canucks. His contract includes a no-move clause and is reportedly open to joining certain teams. Meanwhile, Elias Pettersson is inked to an eight-year, $92 million contract.
Quinn Hughes shared his thoughts about challenges faced this season
As trade rumors swirl around J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson, the Vancouver Canucks are grappling with a challenging stretch in their performances, having lost seven of their last 10 games.
Despite their struggles, captain Quinn Hughes remains optimistic about the team's ability to turn things around.
"Yeah, definitely, a lot more challenges, more ups and downs. Definitely this year has a little bit more of that. But I think my game has never been better, so I know it’s not affecting me (on the ice). As far as our team, I think all this stuff, it’s just going to make us stronger," he said.
Quinn Hughes has returned to practice for the first time after sustaining an undisclosed injury on Dec. 23. He's expected to return to the lineup soon.
