Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes was pleased with the Canucks' effort and resilience as they snapped a 4-game losing streak with a 3-0 shutout win against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night. Hughes emphasized the character that his team showed in the much-needed victory while battling through adversity over the past few weeks.
"I think it just means a lot," Hughes said after the win. "I know how the last couple weeks have been for our team and all the different things we've had to battle and not only the last couple weeks, but you know, this entire season really.”
When asked about the most encouraging part of the team's play during this difficult stretch, Hughes said:
"Just that nothing's coming easy and, you know, we're working, you know, so hard, working as hard as we can, and there's no excuses being made in there. There's no pointing fingers. We just go to work."
Even after a disappointing effort in their previous game, Hughes noted that the team showed up ready to work hard again on the following day.
On the offensive end, Brock Boeser, Quinn Hughes and Kiefer Sherwood provided the goals for Vancouver. Goaltender Kevin Lankinen shutout the Maple Leafs with 20 saves. Dennis Hildeby, his counterpart, stopped 16 shots for Toronto but came up short in the end.
Canucks HC Rick Tocchet on Quinn Hughes's performance
Vancouver Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet had high praise for defenseman Quinn Hughes following the team's 3-0 shutout victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
“He's just a terrific guy," Tocchet said. "He cares about everybody. I mean, he's the same way, you know, whether up five nothing or down five, he's a true captain. It's incredible what he does for us."
In his post-game comments, Tocchet highlighted the team's resilience over the past few years, noting their ability to take punches and keep bouncing back:
"Yeah, (the team showed) a lot of heart... This is one of those times we got back up."
The Canucks will next face the Winnipeg Jets at the Canada Life Center on Tuesday.
