Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes was frustrated after his two-minute roughing penalty against Washington Capitals' Pierre-Luc Dubois in the first period.

The penalty happened at 04:19 during a scrum between Hughes and Dubois. Hughes talked about staying in the penalty box.

"Frustrating because, like, I'm in the box three minutes longer than Dubois." Hughes said, "I don't know how that happens but that's just the way it played out.

Coach Rick Tocchet didn’t fully understand the penalty either, as the referees had initially given a four-minute penalty before changing it to two. Tocchet joked that he would have preferred Hughes to serve the four minutes:

"No, I think Quinn tried to explain it. He didn't know. I honestly don't know. The refs are saying you got a four minute penalty, and then said you're gonna have Quinn (in the penalty box) for the last two. And I said I'd rather have him for the four. They’re good refs."

Nevertheless, Quinn Hughes played well in the 2-1 overtime loss to the Washington Capitals.

He had an assist and three shots on goal and logged 27:13 of ice time. Hughes has been strong this season, with eight goals and 37 assists for 45 points in 36 games. His +14 rating is also commendable, considering his offensive production.

However, Quinn Hughes’ stats dip in losses, with 20 points and a -6 rating. Over his career, he has 51 goals and 326 assists in 400 games.

The Vancouver Canucks lost 2-1 to the Washington Capitals in overtime. Vancouver coach Rick Tocchet talked about the loss.

“We spent a couple days really evaluating our team a little bit and how we want to play, and I thought everybody kind of bought into how we have to play with our team right now, the identity,” Tocchet said, “So, I thought there was a lot of guys doing a lot of good things.”

In the first period, Pierre-Luc Dubois gave Washington the lead, scoring off a rebound with 33 seconds left. In the second period, the Canucks tied it at 1-1. Conor Garland scored on the power play with 37 seconds left, shooting a rebound from the right side of the net.

In overtime, Dubois scored again, finishing a pass from Aliaksei Protas with 41 seconds left to give Washington the win. Despite outshooting Washington 21-5 in the second period, the Canucks couldn't score again.

Quinn Hughes and the Canucks next play against the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday.
