New York Rangers forward Vinny Trocheck responded to the news of teammate Igor Shesterkin's massive eight-year, $92 million contract extension.
Trocheck, who has a seven-year, $39.375 million contract, seemed unfazed by the record-setting contract for the star goaltender.
"I saw KevinWeekes tweet something, but sometimes ... you never know. Just business as usual," Trocheck said after the Rangers' 4-2 win over Pittsburgh on Friday night.
The $11.5 million per year deal makes Shesterkin the highest paid goalie in NHL history, surpassing Carey Price's previous mark of $10.5 million annually.
When asked about the contract, Shesterkin said:
“I cannot say anything else.Maybe we can talk about it tomorrow.”
Shesterkin reportedly turned down an eight-year, $11 million offer from the Rangers before this season, betting on himself to earn an even bigger payday after a stellar 2023-24 campaign.
Igor Shesterkin's extension comes on the heels of the Rangers trading Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks on Friday, which freed up Trouba’s $8 million cap hit for the team.
Fans react to Igor Shesterkin’s mega contract extension
Igor Shesterkin’s new deal sparked intense debate across social media. Many fans supported the contract extension with one tweeting:
"It was about time, Shesterkin leaving would’ve ended the team for a while."
Another wrote:
"As much as I don’t like trouba what a dirt bag organization to extend Igor on the same day trouba is off loaded."
Here are some more fan reactions:
"Glad he is getting good money, I do think goalies should not be signed to contracts longer than 5 years," one fan wrote.
"But I was told by a bunch of idiots players wouldn’t want to sign here now. That lasted an hour," another fan wrote.
"Well, for that amount - he better not let a single puck thru... But he already did.... Lol... He's gonna suck for like the next 3 months... I mean, come on, tonight was Pittsburgh...lol let's see how they handle the kraken on Sun... But glad we won tonight," a user commented.
"You can thank Jacob Trouba being traded to make room on salary for this," another fan wrote.
Through 19 starts this year, the 28-year-old Shesterkin has a 9-9-1 record with a 2.47 GAA and .920 save percentage.
