Jonathan Quick played a big role in the New York Rangers' 2-1 win over the Boston Bruins on Thursday. His three-save sequence in the second period helped keep his team ahead. After a scramble in front of the net, Quick made quick saves on Mark Kastelic, Justin Brazeau and John Beecher in four seconds to stop the Bruins from erasing the 2-0 lead.
“Yeah, a little scramble, kick the rebound right to them and, and it was, bang, bang," Quick said (0:20). "And it just, turns into just a reaction save. Fortunate to get my hand on that one, and help win.”
Quick’s strong play with 32 saves was crucial for the Rangers, who had lost 15 of their last 19 games. With Igor Shesterkin injured, Quick stepped in and delivered. His saves helped keep the Bruins from scoring more.
Beyond his on-ice play, Quick has been a leader off the ice. Forward Brett Berard spoke about the goaltender’s impact, saying:
“He’s a special guy and someone I’m super grateful to be around early in my career. He’s a legend in this game.”
New York had a strong team effort. Mika Zibanejad scored his first goal in a while. Zibanejad’s line with Braden Schneider and Reilly Smith limited the Bruins’ top players. Filip Chytil and Berard added energy and scored goals.
The win was important for the Rangers as it was a positive step forward. Quick played well, and others stepped up, showing that despite recent struggles, they can succeed.
Rangers coach Peter Laviolette praises defense in 2-1 win over Bruins
Rangers coach Peter Laviolette hailed the team’s strong defense in its 2-1 win over the Bruins. He said Brett Berard made the right decision to shoot instead of passing during the 2-on-1.
“I do think both times, the one in Carolina and the one here, he made the right decision,” Laviolette said. “They were taking it away and he’s got that ice, and he can creep in and get the look that he wants, you’ve got to take that. I mean, trying to force a pass doesn’t make sense.”
Bruins coach Joe Sacco expressed frustration with his team’s scoring struggles. He noted that they had chances but couldn’t finish.
“It’s frustrating, obviously we’re not scoring right now at the level we want to be,” Sacco said. “It’s not from lack of some opportunities; we’re just not finishing right now. Another good defensive game for the most part. We have to stick with it.”
The New York Rangers (17-19-1) will face off against the Washington Capitals (25-10-3) on Saturday at noon EST.
