Broadcaster Scott Oake and actor Ryan Reynolds are among 88 Canadian Order of Canada recipients this year. The honor is given to individuals who significantly contribute to their communities and country.

Oake, a longtime host of "Hockey Night in Canada," was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia. He is recognized for his work in addiction recovery. He co-founded the Bruce and Anne Oake Memorial Foundation and the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre. These initiatives help people struggling with addiction, especially those from underserved communities.

Oake has appeared on NHL broadcasts since 1989 with "Hockey Night in Canada." He has also worked for CBC Sports. Currently, he hosts Sportsnet's "After Hours" on Saturday nights.

On Thursday, the NHL Public Relations congratulated Oake via its X account.

"Congratulations to @Sportsnet Hockey Night in Canada broadcaster Scott Oake who has been appointed to the Order of Canada, which honours people who make extraordinary contributions to the country," the tweet read.

Oake's colleague and lead commentator with CBC Sports and Sportsnet for "Hockey Night in Canada," Chris Cuthbert, called the appointment "well deserved."

"Congratulations to my HNIC colleague and friend Scott Oake on his well deserved appointment to the Order of Canada today," Cuthbert tweeted. "His tireless work in establishing the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre in Winnipeg has been inspirational. Not a bad sports commentator as well!"

Reynolds, famous for his work in "Deadpool and Wolverine," was also honored. Reynolds was recognized for his charitable work with groups like Water First Education and the Sick Kids Foundation.

“I’ve always been proud of being Canadian," Reynolds said (via hollywoodreporter.com). "I feel like Canada’s one of my parents. It taught me some core values that have come in handy weekly, if not daily, since I left home when I was 18 or 19 years old.”

Author Maureen Jennings, creator of the Detective William Murdoch novels, was also honored. Other honorees include music executive Randy Lennox, who promoted Canadian talent worldwide, and folk singer Heather Rankin. Holocaust educator Pinchas Gutter was recognized for teaching young people about human rights and history.

GG Mary Simon's statement on Order of Canada recipients Scott Oake, Ryan Reynolds and others

Governor General Mary Simon thanked the appointees for their "hard work, strong leadership and vision.

"Members of the Order of Canada are builders of hope for a better future," Simon said in her statement per CBC. "Each in their own way, they broaden the realm of possibilities and inspire others to continue pushing its boundaries."

Since 1967, over 8,000 Canadians have received this honor.
