The Toronto Maple Leafs suffered a tough 4-3 overtime loss to the Boston Bruins on Saturday night, and fans were quick to point fingers at center Auston Matthews for a costly turnover that led to the Bruins' game-winning goal.
With the game tied 3-3 and in overtime, Matthews tried to pass the puck to Mitch Marner but got turned over, resulting in Brad Marchand’s OT goal.
"Someone needs to rip Matthews a new one after that oopsie," one angry fan tweeted after the game.
Many on social media blamed Matthews directly for the loss, given that his mistake handed the Bruins the deciding goal on a silver platter.
"I don’t know bc I don’t play hockey but I gotta believe a look at who’s there before you pass esp in OT right ?"
Another fan wrote:
"His $13m will help him feel better at night, probably the worse I’ve seen Matthews in his career this season" on X.
Here are some fan reactions:
"I’ve heard core four the past 9 years. It’s not working. Same power-play, same first line, same OT line, Rielly, Matthew’s and Marner. You may as well call Sheldon Keefe back. Overpaid millionaires skating around, but it’s coming together," one fan wrote.
"He literally passed the puck to the opponent like cmon man, that’s an oopsie" another fan wrote.
"I’m so done with this team!!!! See you all Monday" a user commented.
Matthews and the Maple Leafs will look to bounce back from the disappointing defeat when they take on the Winnipeg Jets on Monday night.
