Darnell Nurse drew attention for his celebration after scoring in the Edmonton Oilers’ 6-2 win against the New York Rangers on Saturday. Nurse’s shorthanded goal came with nine seconds left in the first period, assisted by Mattias Janmark. This was Nurse’s first game back after missing three games because of a head injury caused by Toronto’s Ryan Reaves on Nov. 16.
After scoring, Nurse mimicked a punch to the head, referencing the illegal hit from Reaves that left him bleeding. The celebration quickly went viral after "Spittin’ Chiclets" shared it on X, captioning, “Name this celly.”
Fans reacted humorously, with each sharing their unique perspective on Nurse's celebration.
“Ryan Reaves gave me terminal CTE,” one fan said.
"See! Even a guy with no iq can score! Whine one day and mock the next. What a clown. I will never cheer for the Oilers as long as he is on the team!! Never despised a player more in my life!!" another fan said.
"I just lost brain cells from my concussion but I’m back now," a fan said.
Here are some more reactions from fans to Darnell Nurse's celebration on X:
"I remember the other day he was crying around to media about the hit now he’s making fun of it. Lol Feb 1st he’s gonna get another one ahah," a fan said.
"He’s pointing at his brain because it’s something the Oilers didn’t have when they signed him to that retarded contract," another fan said.
"Oilers don’t care about head injuries. Player can walk he is fine. 30 days should be. Not smart at all. One hit he could be really done," one fan said.
