Vancouver Canucks fans were disappointed after reports linked forward Elias Pettersson to a possible trade to the Buffalo Sabres. Insider Elliotte Friedman said during "Hockey Night in Canada" on Saturday that Buffalo is one of the top teams interested.
Pettersson is a key player for Vancouver, with 30 points this season, including 11 goals. He signed an eight-year, $92.8 million contract in March. In the 2022-23 season, he scored 39 goals and 63 assists for 102 points, showing his strong offensive skills.
Rumors of tension between Pettersson and teammate J.T. Miller have fueled speculation about a trade. Fans reacted strongly to the news about Buffalo's interest in Pettersson on X.
“Sabres will ruin him, only hope is to sell the team to Quebec,” one fan posted.
“Just tell (Sabres general manager Kevyn) Adams to call me and I’ll make the deal. Don’t let him make it,” another fan wrote.
"This would instantly turn around the franchise at least in perception & that’s all we got right now. After that, the energy will be good and we can go for a ride on that It can change a lot of narratives immediately🌴 we need it SO BAD Please Kevyn save yourself , convince TPegs" a fan shared their perspective.
Here are some more reactions from fans on X:
"And me...looking from outside telling that Sabres need some grits upfront since the last 3 years. The fact he disappears in the playoffs should says a lot even if he's very talented. If i was a Sabres fan..i wouldn't trust KA to be the guy doing this." a fan mentioned.
"Softest team in the league doesn't need a guy that's having emotional problems because a teammate called him out for being soft! Sabres need some toughness!! " a fan wrote.
"I can’t picture a scenario where we land him? Season is over, no chance at playoffs, cost a lot of young talent to get him and of course will be a huge overpay Would love it though" a fan reacted.
Canucks failed to trade Pettersson to the Hurricanes, following which Sabres showed their interest
Speaking on Saturday's broadcast, Friedman said the Canucks were close to trading Pettersson to the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes instead acquired Mikko Rantanen and Taylor Hall in a blockbuster three-team deal with the Colorado Avalanche and Chicago Blackhawks on Friday.
"There was a time yesterday I thought that Pettersson was going to be a Carolina Hurricane," Friedman said."Obviously it didn't happen... I believe that one of the teams that has really shown a lot of interest is Buffalo."
Vancouver’s struggles on the ice, including a 22-17-10 record and eight losses in its last 10 games, add pressure to make changes.
