The United States women's hockey team is competing at the 2024 Olympics in Paris and took the field against Spain on Monday. They delivered an impressive highlight for the ages in doing so, which caught national attention online. Their end goal is a gold medal, and to do so, they will need a lot more performances like this one.
On one end of the floor, the defense was on point. A brilliant play by the Spanish resulted in a close shot on goal that was defended. It took another deflection and nearly crossed the goal line but was flung away by the goalkeeper.
That started a transition play for Team USA and on the other end of the court, two players sprinted down and got a shot away on goal. When it was initially deflected, the other player was right there to knock it in to break a scoreless tie.
Fans reacted to the stunning play, with some comparing it to the game-winner scored by Sam Reinhart in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. His goal led the Florida Panthers to their first-ever NHL title.
"Nicely done end-to-end rush ladies!," one fan cheered.
"Awesome clear out by our defender to get that transition going to the other end!," another echoed.
"Brb going back in time to make field hockey a mainstream North American sport like basketball or baseball," another said.
"Watching this makes my back hurt," one fan joked.
It was a stunning display from the Olympics. While ice hockey is usually reserved for the Winter Olympics, field hockey is taking center stage at the Summer Games.
Team USA draws key match in field hockey
Despite their efforts, Team USA could only muster a draw against Spain. After that brilliant goal and some good defense, the United States couldn't keep the momentum and eventually, Spain tied the match at one goal apiece.
That is where the scoreline stayed, as neither team was able to mount much after that. The defenses were on point, leading to a grueling draw heading into later matchups. Team USA face Australia on Wednesday, and it will be interesting to see if they can come away with a win.
