Matt Rempe is back with the New York Rangers after an early-season demotion to the AHL. He was not getting enough ice time with the team, so the coaching staff decided to send him somewhere he could get time and continue to develop. Now, he's back with the Rangers and Jake Leschyshyn has been sent down to make room on the roster.
It has been a whirlwind first few weeks of the season for Rempe, who struggled when he got to the AHL this year. Last season, he played moderately well in limited action, but he didn't continue improving in the 2024-25 regular season, so he was sent down.
This move sent shockwaves through the league and the fanbase. NHL fans had their say on the Rangers' latest move, and they're pretty divided on whether or not it was wise.
"We are so back. LFG," one fan said.
"Feel bad for the kid. Drury and Laviolette claim to want to help his development and instead make him into a buffoon," another said.
"Why? Unless injury to Carrick, JB or Erdstrom, don’t understand GM at all," another complained.
"Please send him back down before Wednesday," one added.
Fans aren't sure whether or not this is a good move for either the Rangers or Rempe. The Rangers are currently off to a good start and are in the second spot in the Metropolitan division.
Rangers coach discussed decision to demote Matt Rempe
After just two games on the ice this year, the New York Rangers made the decision to demote Matt Rempe to the AHL. Head coach Peter Laviolette was involved in the decision.
He said, via Yahoo! Sports, on Friday:
"He’s got an opportunity to go out and play some games and get some minutes, continue his development. ... I think that’s really important for a young player. He’s played in a couple of games up here. He practices at a certain level and I think all that’s positive for him.
"But I do think going down and playing more minutes and more responsibility, I think that also builds growth inside of a player."
Rempe is officially back with the Rangers, so the team must have liked what it saw from him during his AHL stint.
