On Sunday, captain Sidney Crosby set a record for most assists in Pittsburgh Penguins history with his 1,034th assist. He did so in the Pens' 3-2 win over the New York Islanders in front of Penguins fans at PPG Paints Arena.

However, an unusual incident happened in the Penguins' previous game, a 6-3 loss to the Islanders on Saturday at UBS Arena. Crosby was initially credited with the assist, but it was later taken away.

Talking about the unusual moment, Crosby admitted with a grin:

"Yeah, it was a little weird. But glad I was able to do it here. It's a win. Yeah, it was a little odd the way it went down, for sure."

Sidney Crosby eventually achieved the milestone in the second period against the Islanders when he set up Michael Bunting on a power play.

Bunting scored to bring up Crosby's 1,034th assist, passing franchise legend Mario Lemieux. The home crowd at the PPG Paints Arena gave Crosby a standing ovation when the milestone was announced.

B/R Open Ice shared a video of the crowd's reaction on X:

Crosby took a photo with Bunting and the milestone puck in the locker room and shared his thanks to his teammates.

“Just being able to play with the guys that I’ve played with over the years, it’s a testament to them,” Crosby said, via NHL.com, “It’s been a lot of fun, and hopefully, I can keep getting more here.”

Lemieux, who held the record before Sidney Crosby, congratulated Crosby.

“I want to congratulate Sid on setting the team’s assist record,” Lemieux said, via NHL.com, “He’s an amazing player, and we’re so fortunate to have him in Pittsburgh. I look forward to even more great things from him.”

Crosby is now 12th in NHL history for assists.
