Hollywood superstar Keanu Reeves thrilled hockey fans this week by signing a one-day contract with the Ontario Hockey League's Windsor Spitfires.
Reeves grew up playing hockey in Toronto and had also tried out as a goalie prospect for the Spitfires as a teenager but was unable to join the team due to injury.
On Thursday, the actor finally got his chance to suit up with Windsor, signing a contract and donning the Spitfires jersey.
Photos of Keanu Reeves with the Spitfires quickly lit up social media, garnering amusing reactions from hockey fans.
One fan jokingly commented:
"Something tells me he's overage."
Another fan took a pic from a movie and wrote:
"The best goalie the Hamilton Mustangs have ever seen"
Others simply expressed delight at seeing the beloved actor embracing his ice hockey dream.
"That’s actually so awesome I want to see the highlights. Imagine the dude scores," one fan wrote on X.
"What number did he have on the jersey? I see an increase in jersey sales! I know I want one!," another fan wrote.
"absolute lejund. We have a wicked pick-up game on Friday if you wanna get in Coach!," a user commented.
"Bring up to Busters Billy and Al's skate ! Look'n good big boy ! Keanu too," another user wrote.
Interestingly, Keanu Reeves' first film role was as a hockey goalie in the 1986 movie "Youngblood," which was about a teenager aiming to join the NHL.
Windsor Spitfire GM Bill Bowler on Keanu Reeves' one-day signing
GM Bill Bowler and team co-owner Brian Schwab were on hand to make Keanu Reeves's unconventional signing official.
"It's a big day for our organization," Bowler said on Tursday at press conference. "We are so proud to finally have Keanu on our squad. If he's half the goalie he was in Youngblood, we should do well this season."
The Spitfires are auctioning off Reeves' jersey to support the Canadian Mental Health Association. Bowler emphasized the team's commitment to the cause, stating:
"We are big supporters of the CMHA and hope the auction for this extremely rare jersey will help such an important cause in our community."
Team captain Liam Greentree expressed enthusiasm about the Hollywood icon joining the team, even if only for a day.
"We really could use some of those skills on the ice, and he plays in a band too? Keanu will get along great with the rest of the team for sure. Definitely a welcome addition."
This unique signing has certainly brought attention to both the Spitfires and their charitable efforts.
