The hockey world is mourning the tragic death of Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau. On Friday morning, the Blue Jackets confirmed via social media that Gaudreau and his brother Matthew died on Thursday evening.
The two were hit by a drunk driver while riding their bicycles. Johnny Gaudreau was just 31 years old.
Following the tragic death, NHL fans took to social media to mourn the passing of the seven-time NHL All-Star.
"The hockey world is suffering together today," a fan said.
"Such a horrible tragedy. Thoughts and prayers are with the family," another fan said.
Gaudreau played in 763 games, recording 243 goals and 500 assists for 743 points.
"Absolutely the most shocking thing ive ever seen. Tragic doesnt even describe it. RIP Johnny Hockey," another fan said.
Fans were shocked by the death of Gaudreau who was one of the Blue Jackets' best players.
"This is so tragic… my heart goes out to the family, friends and his many fans," a fan said.
"Absolutely speechless. What a devastating loss. RIP Johnny," another fan said.
Blue Jackets issue statement on death of Johnny Gaudreau
Following the tragic passing of Johnny Gaudreau, the Columbus Blue Jackets issued a statement.
“The Columbus Blue Jackets are shocked and devastated by this unimaginable tragedy. Johnny was not only a great hockey player, but more significantly a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to his wife, Meredith, his children, Noa and Johnny, his parents, their family and friends on the sudden loss of Johnny and Matthew," the statement read.
The statement says the team is asking for prayers for the Gaudreau family and requests that their privacy be respected during this difficult time.
“Johnny played the game with great joy which was felt by everyone that saw him on the ice. He brought a genuine love for hockey with him everywhere he played from Boston College to the Calgary Flames to Team USA to the Blue Jackets. He thrilled fans in a way only Johnny Hockey could."
"The impact he had on our organization and our sport was profound, but pales in comparison to the indelible impression he made on everyone who knew him. Johnny embraced our community when he arrived two years ago, and Columbus welcomed him with open arms. We will miss him terribly and do everything that we can to support his family and each other through this tragedy."
Johnny Gaudreau played two seasons in Columbus after signing a seven-year, $68.25 million contract in July 2022. He began his career with the Calgary Flames and signed with Columbus after nine years with Calgary.
