Fans reacted as the Boston Bruins suffered a disappointing 4-0 shutout loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night. The defeat dropped the Bruins' record to 6-7-1 on the season.
The Maple Leafs got goals from Morgan Rielly, William Nylander, Matthew Knies and Steven Lorentz in the rout. Toronto netminder Anthony Stolarz stopped all 28 Bruins shots he faced, while Boston's Jeremy Swayman managed 23 saves in the loss.
Frustrated Bruins fans have directed much of their ire towards coach Jim Montgomery on social media, with one tweeting:
"Team has quit on the coach, and I respect it. Jim Montgomery is a cancer to the Boston Bruins."
Another wrote:
"If there's a time to fire Montgomery, it's now. EMBARRASSING."
Here are some more fan reactions:
"Monty and Sweeney love ‘gritty’ veterans - even if they can’t skate. They ‘keep it simple’. Invest in your young core!! That means time on ice - playing thru mistakes - staying in the lineup. Young legs and salaries are a powerful combo," one fan wrote on X.
"Monty needs to be fired at this point," another fan wrote.
"Did Monty take 7 penalties?? Long standing problem is we take way too many many. Our outstanding PK has covered for it time and again. Not so much this year," a user commented.
"You guys f**king s**k. Zadorov is garbage, fire Monty, and hand the reins over to Kelly," another user wrote.
The Boston Bruins will look to bounce back when they take on the Calgary Flames on Thursday night.
Game recap: Boston Bruins' 4-0 shutout loss to the Leafs
Defenseman Morgan Rielly opened the scoring in the second period, blasting a shot past Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman. William Nylander added to the Leafs' lead later in the period, scoring their second powerplay goal. Nylander's shot deflected off Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo and into the net.
The Maple Leafs continued their powerplay dominance in the third period when Matthew Knies tipped in a Nylander shot for his first career NHL goal. Toronto's powerplay went an impressive 3-for-7 on the night.
With the Bruins scrambling late, Steven Lorentz added an empty netter to seal the 4-0 victory for the Leafs. It was a dominant performance by Toronto, stifling the Bruins' offense.
