Tanner Jeannot was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday night. The Nashville Predators received for defenseman Cal Foote, a second-round pick in the 2024 NHL draft, and a third-, fourth- and fifth-round pick in the 2023 NHL draft.
NHL executives, insiders and fans alike did not believe that Jeannot was worth that much value.
One quipped:
"That's a draft pick for every goal Tanner Jeannot has scored this season."
Another wrote:
"It seems really likely to me at this moment in time that Tampa just paid more for Tanner Jeannot than the Rangers will for Patrick Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko combined."
Here's a look at other hilarious reactions:
Who won the Tanner Jeannot trade?
Lightning GM Julien BriseBois acknowledged overpaying for Jeannot in the trade. He said:
"The reality at the trade deadline is you're going to have to overpay."
Tanner Jeannot is in the final season of a two-year, $1.6 million contract which he signed with Nashville in July 2021. He's set to become a restricted free agent at the end of this season. BriseBois said:
"The player goes to the higher bidder. Nashville didn't have to trade him. They controlled his rights for an additional year -- he's a restricted free agent. To acquire the player we would have to make it worth their while."
He added what his vision is for Jeannot and what he brings to the already full Tampa Bay Lightning offense:
"He's a top-9 forward; he's going to produce some secondary scoring for us. That's not why we brought him here. Everything he offers us on offense is an added benefit."
Jeannot is a very physical player. He's known to be a hard finisher of his checks. BriseBois outlined the qualities that made them want him:
"He's a big, fast, physical top-line forward. He's hard to play against. He plays with pace. He finishes checks often and hard. He can defend. He manages the puck well. He brings his teammates into the fight. By all accounts, he's a great teammate and he's the type of player that helps you win when it gets hard."
Tanner Jeannot has 14 points (five goals, nine assists) in 56 games for the Predators this season. It will be interesting to see what role he plays for the Bolts heading into the Stanley Cup playoffs.
