Edmonton Oilers forward Sam Carrick has been fined $2,213.54 for slashing Florida Panthers defenseman Dmitry Kulikov during Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final in Florida on Monday. The money from the fine will go to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
The incident took place at 17:57 of the third period and resulted in Carrick receiving a minor penalty for slashing. The fine announced by the NHL’s Department of Player Safety is the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
NHL fans reacted differently to the news on X (formerly Twitter).
One fan suggests the fine is insignificant:
"Pocket money for him…"
Another fan referred to Leon Draisaitl elbowing Aleksander Barkov in the jaw during Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final and still evading suspension.
"That’s not how you spell Draisaitl suspension."
Some fans felt there was inconsistency in the league's disciplinary actions. Let's take a look at some more reactions from NHL fans on X.
"That’s great. I guess Florida can jump at McDavid and Draisaitl’s head and only get 2 minutes," one fan noted.
"Whoa, goes to his car ashtray to pay that massive fine," another fan quipped.
"And Draisaitl gets nothing. unserious league, guess u gotta protect ur golden boys right," one fan wrote.
"Accidental cross check to the face by Soucy on McDavid (no injury)- suspended. Targeted elbow to the head by Draisaitl on Barkov (injury)- no suspension. Every fan knows if that elbow was on McDavid that’s 2 games +.NHLPS isn’t concerned about player safety, that’s very clear," another fan wrote.
Edmonton Oilers' Darnell Nurse injured in Game 2 of Stanley Cup Final against Florida Panthers
Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse suffered an undisclosed injury during Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Florida Panthers.
Despite leaving the game briefly, coach Kris Knoblauch doesn't anticipate Nurse missing any future games.
“He’s getting looked at right now. He was on the bench. Yeah, I think he’ll be good to play, but he’s getting looked at, so I don’t have an update,” Knoblauch said (via NHL.com).
Oilers Nurse was hit by Panthers forward Evan Rodrigues in the first period and returned to the bench in the second period but played limited minutes afterward. Knoblauch mentioned Nurse's ongoing assessment by medical staff but didn't provide an update on his status the next day.
"I have not spoken to our medical staff,” Knoblauch said. “I'll be seeing them in about 15 minutes, and I'll get that report then."
Additionally, the Oilers lost forward Warren Foegele due to a knee-on-knee hit, resulting in a major penalty and game misconduct. The Panthers lead the series 2-0.
