NHL fans on the internet mocked the Toronto Maple Leafs for reportedly trying to sign Stanley Cup champion Steven Lorentz. According to Elliotte Friedman, Lorentz is joining the Leafs on a player tryout (PTO). This would notably be Lorentz's fourth team should the Leafs decide to offer him a contract.
The 28-year-old center played for the Florida Panthers last season, appearing in 16 playoff games during the Stanley Cup-winning run and netting a couple of goals in the process.
Moreover, Lorentz is the third Panthers player to join the Toronto Maple Leafs this offseason, following Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Anthony Stolarz. Here's what fans on X/Twitter have to say about the news. One tweeted:
"Lol they get the guy that contributed 0. Typical toronto."
Another chimed in and opined:
"I've heard he's "gritty" and will go into the trenches."
Here are some of the other top reactions on X.
"In 22/23 Lorentz lead all SJS fwds in HITS and had an impressive TkA to GvA ratio. He also doesn't take many penalties, which is important for a 4th line guy. As a SENS fan I wish this PTO were as atrocious as Leafs fans seem to," another opined.
"If we add Max P then we aren’t in that bad of a spot, in my opinion our goaltending and D is solid we just need to make a few trades to make our bottom 6 strong and we will go far in the playoffs," wrote another fan.
"Technically the Leafs have now won the Stanley Cup this year. I can't wait for the 10hr TSN special," one humorously said.
"So they signed OEL, Stolarz and now Lorentz - Taking that copycat league a little seriously?" another commented.
Toronto Maple Leafs were interested in Filip Zadina before his move to Europe
According to reports, the Toronto Maple Leafs were among the teams interested in signing the 24-year-old Filip Zadina. Once considered a promising winger in the NHL, Zadina reportedly rejected an offer from the Leafs and decided to join HC Davos in Switzerland instead.
Zadina was drafted No. 6 overall by the Detroit Red Wings and also played for the San Jose Sharks during his six-year stint in the NHL before heading to join the Swiss side.
