The Edmonton Oilers recently auctioned Stanley Cup Final jerseys of their players, as captain Connor McDavid's jersey was the top seller. The memorabilia were from Game 3, which was played at the Oilers' home arena, Rogers Place. Edmonton lost 4-3 to the Florida Panthers in the game. The jerseys were put on auction on Thursday.
On Monday, McDavid's jersey auction ended after 50 bids and was sold for $70,100. The announcement of the auction was made through Edmonton's Twitter account:
"You can own #Oilers game-worn jerseys from the Stanley Cup Final! 😮 Visit http://EdmontonOilers.com/Auction to check 'em out & get your bids in before midnight."
NHL fans quickly took to social media to share their thoughts on the auction.
"$70,000 was the most I was willing to pay for McDavid's jersey, and I see it's currently at $70,100... Oh well, maybe next time." another fan said.
"Sure, let me just get a mortgage on my house to afford one thanks." a fan said.
Here are some more reactions from fans on X:
"It's almost as if you have already read the script: shouldn't the auction go until game 7? You are planning on playing after the auction deadline, right? I mean, there was absolutely nothing fishy about game 4?" a fan questioned.
"When will the other rounds and finals game jerseys become available? Will any be saved for the summer sale?" another fan asked.
"these are gonna go for so much i am excited to see the auction results" a fan tweeted.
Connor McDavid and Oilers head to Florida for Game 5
Edmonton is down 3-1 in the series and if the Oilers wish to keep their Stanley Cup hopes alive, they will have to win the upcoming games. The expectation from Edmonton was quite low after the first three losses.
But things have changed a bit after a Game 4 win. The Panthers who were looking tough could be just as vulnerable as any other team. Edmonton won 8-1 in Game 4 and will try to replicate that form in Game 5 in Florida.
