NHL fans have once again raised their voices and expressed their collective outrage following the latest sexual assault allegations involving former Chicago Blackhawks video coach Brad Aldrich.
In a Reddit post shared on the r/hockey subreddit, one user highlighted the disturbing nature of the allegations with a post captioned,
"Another lawsuit against Chicago Blackhawks: Ex-player, ‘Black Aces’ teammate of Kyle Beach alleges 2010 sexual assault by former video coach."
The reactions from fans on Reddit were swift and indignant. One fan was quoted as saying,
"Jesus Christ, this dude needs to be locked up. There needs to be harsher penalties for those involved in the coverup."
Another fan responded to the initial post by pointing out an unsettling aspect of the situation, saying,
"He does, but there is another opening at a high school."
A different fan on Reddit provided some insight into the measures taken by the NHL in response to the Kyle Beach cover-up, stating,
"Everyone who was found to be involved in the Beach coverup is already suspended indefinitely by the league, but this should stop any potential comeback bids. We'll have to see if this suit reveals involvement from anyone else."
One Reddit user emphasized the collective responsibility of the organization, stating,
"The organization should be punished as well."
Jonathan Toews' regret over handling of Kyle Beach and Brad Aldrich's case
In 2021, Jonathan Toews expressed remorse regarding the handling of the sexual assault case involving former Blackhawks player Kyle Beach. On May 13, 2021, a former player, later revealed to be Beach, filed a lawsuit alleging that he had endured prolonged sexual assault by video coach Brad Aldrich during the Blackhawks' Stanley Cup-winning run in 2010.
An investigation uncovered that Blackhawks executives had discussions about the sexual assault claims but failed to address them until after the Stanley Cup finals. Subsequently, Aldrich was given the option to resign, which he accepted. The lawsuit was settled out of court in 2021.
During an interview with TSN, Toews acknowledged that he wasn't fully informed about all the case details but conceded that he should have offered more support to Beach. He stated,
"I can say with 100 percent certainty that if I had known about what was happening with Kyle and what he was going through, I would have acted differently."
Toews also emphasized that the organization should have taken greater responsibility for ensuring Beach's well-being.
