NHL Network’s new “Top 20 Wingers Right Now” list surprised many fans by leaving out Vancouver Canucks' Brock Boeser. Despite a strong 2023-24 season where he scored 40 goals and had 73 points, Boeser did not make the list.
NHL Network posted on X/Twitter and asked:
"Introducing the Top 20 Wings Right Now! What are your thoughts on our list?"
Boeser’s absence raised many questions about how the rankings were made. Here's a look at some fan reactions on X:
"Tired of Boeser being disrespected. 40 goals," one fan said.
"No Boeser??," another fan commented.
"Bratt, Kreider, Boeser?," one fan asked.
"Boeser exists," another fan commented.
"Is Brock Boeser a goalie? How is he not on this list?," one fan said.
"The disrespect on @BBoeser16 not making the list... revenge szn incoming ... Stanley Cup soooon come @Canucks #JustWaitOnIt," another fan said.
The rankings include big names like Nikita Kucherov and David Pastrnak. In the playoffs, Boeser scored seven goals, placing him fifth among wingers. His 73 points were tied for 16th overall, surpassing stars like Brad Marchand and Alex Ovechkin. Furthermore, Boeser’s plus-minus rating of +23 was the best among right-wingers and tied for third among all wingers.
As the new season starts, Boeser has a chance to show why he should be considered among the top wingers.
Canucks will likely wait on Brock Boeser’s contract extension
Earlier in July, NHL Insider Farhan Lalji reported that the Canucks likely won’t extend Brock Boeser’s contract soon. The TSN contributor noted the team’s concerns about Boeser’s health and consistency:
“I don’t think that’s going to happen at this point. I do think that as the [coming] season progresses and into [next] offseason, I think they’ll address that, and we’ll see where he is in terms of whether or not he can follow it up. Both in terms of his production and health because those two have been tied so closely together, right?”
Last season, he missed part of the playoffs due to a blood clot, raising concerns about his long-term reliability. Though Boeser recently scored 30 goals in a season for the first time, it took him eight years to reach this milestone, leading to questions about his consistency.
Lalji added that the Canucks will review Brock Boeser's performance and health this season before deciding on an extension. They will hope Boeser’s strong 40-goal performance last year is not a one-time event and that he can maintain his high level of play.
