Just four minutes into their fourth game of the preseason on Saturday, new Montreal Canadiens signing Patrik Laine had a knee-on-knee collision with Toronto Maple Leafs center Cedric Pare. It left the forward writing in pain, and Laine had to be helped off the ice, as he was unable to put any weight on his left foot.

Montreal was in a power play when Patrik Laine tried to control the puck close to the blue line but collided knee-on-knee with Pare. The 26-year-old immediately dropped on the ice, visibly in pain with what appeared to be a lower-body injury.

Sports injury specialist Dr. Harjas Grewal discussed several possible injuries for Patrik Laine, ranging from a torn ACL that would end his season, to a torn MCL, with recovery depending on its severity.

"Concerns for Laine are as follows: Torn ACL (season over), Torn MCL (depends on grade), Torn meniscus (4-6 weeks if trimmed, 4+ months if repaired), Bone bruise (week-to-week)," Grewal tweeted.
"Can be just 1, multiple or all of the above injuries. Exam is helpful but MRI tomorrow will clarify,” Grewal tweeted.

Cedric Pare wasn't penalized on the play, but Patrick Laine was visibly frustrated after the injury, as he threw away his helmet on the ice. Earlier this offseason, Laine was traded by the Columbus Blue Jackets to the Canadiens in exchange for Jordan Harris along with a second-round pick in 2026.

Fans empathize with Patrik Laine after suspected serious injury

Habs faithful were quick to react on social media after the collision between their new forward Laine and the Leafs center and Liane’s subsequent exit from the ice. Many empathized with the 26-year-old and sent their best wishes to the player.

Following are some fan comments from X/Twitter:

“Genuinely feel bad for Laine, hopefully it isn't season ending. He seemed like he was motivated and determined to make this his best year. I hope mentally he does alright if this is a season ending injury.”
“If his season is over I will be completely devastated,” commented one user.

Some even pointed out the mental toll such an injury could take on the player. In retrospect, Patrik Laine had sought out the NHLPA's help in dealing with similar issues in the past.

“Add the mental strain this adds to the guy. You have to want to come back so bad but could you blame him if he just doesn't have the spirit left. It's just fucking unbelievable that this never fails.”
“I definitely feel bad for the guy … unfortunate injury for sure,” wrote one fan.

The Leafs eventually won the game, coming away with a 2-1 win. Habs’ Kirby Dach scored the only goal late in the third period for his team, while Nicholas Robertson netted twice for Toronto.
