The Toronto Maple Leafs decided to place Alex Nylander, the brother of top forward William Nylander, on waivers. It seemingly brings to an end what was a special connection on the ice for the two siblings, who are also both the sons of former NHL forward Michael Nylander.
Fans reacted to the news on social media by not only taking a couple of digs at Maple Leafs fans but even suggesting that their team should pick up the younger Nylander.
There were even other fans who noted that they may have been fooled into initially thinking that the Leafs placed William Nylander on waivers before noticing the first initial of "A" for Alex.
"Welp, it’s been fun having the Nylander bros together. Can’t wait for Alex to eliminate us," wrote @Paul_Saccone.
"Toronto fans in shambles," wrote @daKid1905.
"No wonder willy played so uninspired last night. He's depressed about it. Laziest game of his career last night, didn't even want to move his feet at all," expressed @ati5937.
"Bruins should take a run at nylander they need a spark offensively," wrote @bruins374620.
"Should've left the A out for fun! I'm sure there would have been a totally normal response to that," added @TonyAndrock.
"It'd be funny if Nylander gets claimed by the ducks since they play tomorrow," wrote @JavisCee.
"Alex Nylander playing hockey with his brother was a really good story until the playing hockey part started," added @justokay34.
Alex Nylander appeared in five games with the Leafs after being officially signed from the American Hockey League affiliate Toronto Marlies; he didn't register a point.
Alex Nylander already has NHL experience
Born in Calgary, Alex Nylander was originally selected by the Buffalo Sabres as the eighth overall pick in the 2016 NHL Draft.
Ironically, his first career NHL game would come against the Maple Leafs in 2017. Eventually, he was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks and decided to wear jersey No. 92 - the same number his father Michael wore during his own time with the Blackhawks.
In January 2022, he was on the move again, getting sent to the Pittsburgh Penguins, though he mostly played with their American Hockey League affiliate.
Once again, he was traded and landed with the Columbus Blue Jackets and played in 23 games for them in 2023-24, scoring 11 goals with four assists.
In 126 career NHL games, he's scored 25 goals with 24 assists.
