The Toronto Maple Leafs have re-signed restricted free-agent forward Connor Dewar on a one-year, $1.18 million deal on Tuesday. Dewar had filed for arbitration earlier this summer. The Leafs acquired him in March from the Minnesota Wild at the trade deadline in exchange for prospect Dmitry Ovchinnikov and a draft pick.
NHL fans quickly reacted to the news on social media.
"Treliving finally woke up from his nap," One fan said, referencing the Maple Leafs' general manager.
"The Leafs finally signed Connor," another fan said.
"Great value but wish it was 3-5 years," another fan said.
Dewar's re-signing has sparked a mix of reactions among fans, with many eager to see how he will perform in Toronto.
"LETS GO PLAN THE PARADE HAHA," one fan said.
"Good deal! Welcome back to the team Dewey," another fan said.
"I would've gone an extra year if possible but it's a solid deal," one fan said.
Connor Dewar played for Wild and Maple Leafs last season
Connor Dewar was selected 92nd overall by the Minnesota Wild in the 2018 NHL draft. Last season, the 5-foot-10 center posted 11 goals and 19 points over 74 games, split between the Wild and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Additionally, he had an assist in a playoff game against the Boston Bruins.
When the Leafs acquired him in March, the Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving said (h/t The Hockey News):
"What has attracted us to him is — he's a real defensively responsible center ice man. I don't think you can have too many centre ice men. He's proficient on the penalty kill. A specific area that we wanted to see if we could help ourselves with."
"He gives us more depth in the middle. We've talked briefly with Sheldon (Keefe) over the course of today, but a lot over the last few weeks of areas that we'd like to address, and that's where we think Connor fits in with us. He's a guy who's defensively sound, he's a very competitive player, and hopefully he can help us on the penalty kill."
In his career, Dewar has 19 goals and 43 points in 190 games.
Connor Dewar's last contract was a two-year deal worth $1.6 million with the Wild, signed in June 2022.
