Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew were tragically killed in a road accident in Oldmans Township, New Jersey on Aug. 29. They were in town for their younger sister's wedding and were riding bicycles when they were hit by a car allegedly driven by a drunk driver.

Johnny shared two children, Noa and Johnny Jr., with his wife Meredith, who is pregnant with their third child.

Since their death, the hockey community and Johnny and Matthew’s family have rallied to honor their memories. Their sisters Kristin and Katie and parents Guy and Jean Gaudreau regularly share throwback photos, posts and messages on social media.

On Dec. 21, the Philadelphia Flyers organized a special pregame puck drop ceremony to honor the brothers. The Flyers players wore Johnny and Matthew’s high school hockey jerseys during the warmups. The brothers attended Gloucester Catholic High School, which is around 15 minutes away from the team's home arena, Wells Fargo Center.

In October, the New Jersey Devils and New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association announced the Johnny & Matthew Gaudreau High School Hockey Championships MVP Award. The brothers led their high school to its first-ever state championship in 2010.
