Peter Baugh from The Athletic reported that Braden Schneider signed a two-year, $4.4 million extension with the Rangers on Saturday. The deal carries a $2.2 million salary cap hit.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman announced on X (formerly Twitter) that Braden Schneider and the New York Rangers had agreed to a deal for two years at $2.2 million. Following the news, NHL fans began reacting to it on X.
"Good deal, think he could’ve gotten a little more on a 3 yr but he can get a nice payday once Trouba is actually 1000% gone the same yr this is up," one fan said.
"He’s awful," another fan said.
"Great move although I wish it was more term for a bargain down the road. He’s a keeper," one fan commented.
Here are some reactions from NHL fans on X:
"They will regret not signing him long term," one fan posted.
"Overpay," a fan commented.
"This will bite them in the ass in 2 years time. He will be making 5 afterwards," one X user said.
The Rangers picked Schneider in the first round of the 2020 NHL Draft. Last season, he played all 82 games, scoring five goals and totaling 10 points while averaging 15 minutes and 53 seconds of ice time per game.
Vince Mercogliano of lohud.com reported that negotiations had been progressing on a bridge contract for Schneider.
“Word is that they’re making progress with Schneider on a bridge deal (likely two or three years) for an average annual value in the range of $2.5 million, according to one person with knowledge of the situation who spoke to lohud.com, part of the USA TODAY Network, under the condition of anonymity,” Mercogliano wrote.
Braden Schneider's role is predicted to grow more significant in the coming years. His reported contract could benefit the Rangers, aligning with his evolving role on the team's defense.
New York Rangers sign Chad Ruhwedel to one-year contract amid defensive challenges
On Saturday, the New York Rangers signed Chad Ruhwedel to a one-year, two-way contract valued at $775,000, with $450,000 guaranteed. His signing was surprising since he played only five games and missed the playoffs after being traded.
General manager Chris Drury aimed to strengthen defense after a challenging season. Jacob Trouba's future is uncertain due to trade talks and salary-cap issues. Ryan Lindgren's contract negotiations and arbitration filing add to the team's defensive uncertainties. Ruhwedel's role will likely be small, providing backup for a defense with many uncertainties.
