Former NHL player Tony DeAngelo, who plays in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), reacted on social media to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s sudden resignation. An avid supporter of US President-elect Donald Trump, DeAngelo also expressed his happiness about Trump’s upcoming inauguration day.

Posting on X, DeAngelo said:

“The Donald rolling back into DC in two weeks. Trudeau OUT in the great country of Canada. Things are on the up & up to get North America back on track and start taking care of the CITIZENS of your own country first! #MAGA #MCGA.”

DeAngelo's post stirred up a frantic online debate. The former New York Rangers player even got involved in some heated exchanges himself.

On Monday, Justin Trudeau announced his resignation at a press conference outside his residence at Rideau Cottage in Ottawa.

Political pundits said that the fragile state of Canada’s economy and President-elect Trump’s declaration to impose heavy border tariffs contributed to Trudeau’s decision to resign.

This marks the end of Trudeau’s nine-year tenure as PM. He had been under pressure from within his party as recent polls showed an increasing swell of support for the opposition Conservative Party. Canada is due to hold elections in 2025, with Oct. 20 the deadline to elect a new national leader.

Tony DeAngelo claims NHL exiled him for supporting Donald Trump

During his time in the NHL, DeAngelo played for the Arizona Coyotes, New York Rangers, Carolina Hurricanes and Philadelphia Flyers. On Nov 6., 2024, while congratulating Trump on being re-elected, he alleged in a post on X that he was forced out of the NHL because of his political views.

“This feels good. I was one of the only athletes to stand behind Trump from day one. It’s one of the reasons I’m not in the nhl anymore but our country is more important! The silent majority once again showed up, people who unfortunately had to be scared to support used the VOTE!” his post read.

DeAngelo believes North America will rise again following turmoil in political events.
