The Vancouver Canucks suffered a disheartening 3-0 defeat to the struggling Nashville Predators on Friday at Rogers Arena, capping off a dismal homestand. The team's struggles have been compounded by injuries to key players, including captain Quinn Hughes.
The Canucks have lost three of their last four games and have secured just two victories in their last six home games, posting a 2-2-2 record during that span, which highlights their recent difficulties at Rogers Arena.
With the Canucks clinging to the final playoff spot in the Western Conference, a win over the underperforming Predators seemed crucial. However, despite their struggles to create offense, the Predators secured a vital victory.
The first period ended scoreless, but left-winger Steven Stamkos broke the deadlock with his 12th goal of the season at 16:53 of the second period. In the final period, with the Canucks trailing 1-0 and just three minutes remaining, coach Rick Tocchet pulled goaltender Kevin Lankinen for an extra attacker.
However, this move backfired as Swedish forward Gustav Nyquist scored an empty-netter with 1:44 left in the game, followed by Colton Sissons' empty-net goal in the final minute.
The shutout loss sparked frustration among fans, who took to social media to criticize the Canucks' lackluster performance.
"TV is going out the window, this team sucks", wrote one fan on X/Twitter.
"Second shutout loss of the season at home and it is just getting worse", said another fan.
"Yay my favourite team is so good that they couldn’t score a goal against one of the worst teams in the league so exciting", one fan added.
In light of these performances and unending injury updates, many Canucks fans have begun urging management to make a significant trade to keep their Stanley Cup hopes alive.
"Time to trade Miller, can't just do cardio for a month after a vacation and rip on other players for not performing", wrote one fan.
"At this point, just trade everyone not named Quinn", said another.
"How badly we miss Hughes. Trade Kerry abd a first and bring all Hughes boys to Vancouver," one fan added.
Steven Stamkos leads Predators to 3-0 shutout win over Vancouver Canucks
The Vancouver Canucks, still reeling from injuries, hosted the Nashville Predators at Rogers Arena on Friday. However, the Predators were determined to secure a win, dominating the match from start to finish and ultimately emerging with a 3-0 shutout victory.
Forward Gustav Nyquist and Colton Sissons sealed the win with empty-net goals in the final three minutes. Nevertheless, it was left-winger Steven Stamkos who stole the show, breaking the deadlock with his 12th goal of the season at 16:53 of the second period. This milestone goal marked Stamkos' 567th NHL goal, surpassing former NHLer Patrick Marleau and securing 24th place on the NHL's all-time goals list.
Meanwhile, the Canucks' struggles continue, with a concerning 7-8-6 home record. They have lost three of their last four games and have not won consecutive games since Dec. 1.
The Canucks will look to bounce back when they face the Montreal Canadiens at Centre Bell on Monday.
