The United States is chasing history but Finland will look to spoil the party in the World Juniors final on Sunday in Ottawa.
They are the last teams standing from the pool of the top 10 hockey nations after two weeks of intense competition. Finland defeated USA 4-3 in overtime in the third preliminary round clash on Dec. 29.
Since then, the defending champions defeated Canada in the preliminaries, Switzerland in the quarterfinals and Czechia in the semifinals. On the other hand, Finland has won five straight after losing to Canada in its opening game and will look to carry that form in the championship final.
The US plans to join the club of back-to-back champion nations in the tournament. Canada, Czech Republic, the Soviet Union and Russia are the only teams who have achieved it. Before this tournament, the Americans have never reached the finals of the World Juniors the following year after winning the championship.
The US is aiming for its seventh championship while Finland will try and win the World Juniors for the sixth time. They last won the title in 2019. Losing semifinalists Sweden and Czechia will face off in the bronze medal game before the final.
