Ex-NHLer Valeri Bure made his first appearance in the latest episode of his wife Candace Cameron Bure’s podcast. Married for over 28 years, the former right winger shared some valuable parenting tips and the importance of investing time for children.
Candace and Valeri have three children together, all of whom are already in their 20s. Dr. Josh and Christi Straub, who were on the podcast panel, asked Valeri Bure to share how they established the foundation for the close-knit family they now have.
“One of the things—I mean, we all know raising kids is one of the toughest jobs in the world,” Bure said. "But it’s also rewarding; it pays off as your kids get older. One of the things I always say is, you’ve got to invest your time. It’s the time you invest in your kids.
“A lot of my friends say, ‘Well, I don't have time, I’ve got to provide, or I have to do this.’ But you will always find time for your kids, and the kids always value that time. That could be just one-on-one, sitting and listening to them.”
Bure pointed out that even when it seems like children aren't paying attention, they notice when their parents are present. He mentioned an instance where Candace questioned why they were attending their sons' hockey games, thinking they wouldn't notice their presence.
“And I’d say, ‘Believe me, they’re watching. They see you there. It’s very important that you show up and just sit there,’” Valeri Bure said.
Candace then recalled how she initially thought it would be fine to just wait in the car or multitask on her phone during the games. However, she learned from Valeri and their children that being physically present wasn’t enough—she needed to be emotionally there as well.
The kids would even call her out if she was on her phone, and Valeri Bure said it made a difference when she was fully attentive. Candace acknowledged that although it can be tempting to juggle tasks during those moments, being truly present and engaged with her children was priceless.
Candace Bure hails ‘rockstar dad’ Valeri Bure
Candace Bure had some high praise for her husband, Valeri Bure, as she hosted him for the first time on her podcast. She appreciated Valeri for being an outstanding father and partner and shared how his coaching and guidance have shaped who their kids are today.
“Well, he's just a rockstar dad,” Candace Bure said. "I want to say that I don't want to embarrass you, but you are. I'm going to cry.
“You're an incredible father and an incredible partner, and I mean, I know our kids wouldn't be who they are today without you and all of the coaching and training that you've done, and you and I together have done over the years with them.”
Candace recounted that Valeri not only coached their children in various sports like hockey and tennis but also extended his coaching to other kids. She said she believed Valeri's insights and experiences would be valuable to listeners, especially those who are about to go through similar parenting challenges.
