Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid squared off in a McDonald’s challenge on Saturday. The challenge is part of a new ad campaign from McDonald’s. In the McDonald’s challenge, Matthews and McDavid compete in several events.
McDonald's Canada shared the video of the challenge on X and tweeted:
"Is this the *real* showdown? I personally think so, but the burgers go hard too."
The first one was a stickhandling challenge, McDavid scored one point while Matthews scored zero. In the box flip challenge, Matthews won with one point, and McDavid got zero. In the burger balance challenge, Matthews succeeded, and McDavid lost. The showdown ends there, leaving fans amused by their fun rivalry.
The McDonald’s challenge is a lighthearted way to show the playful side of Matthews and McDavid. It also worked as an exciting social media campaign for the McDonald's advertisement.
The McDonald's advertisement featuring Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid
It began with a tweet exchange between McDavid and Matthews. On Jan. 3, McDavid tweeted, tagging Matthews, daring him to hit a crossbar shot.
"@AM34 crossbar and in, let’s see it."
Replying to which, Matthews tweeted:
"@cmcdavid97 bet you can’t hit a billboard from 50 feet."
This exchange was part of the new McDonald’s commercial "The Showdown."
The ad starts with McDavid taking slap shots on an empty rink. Matthews interrupts and asks what’s in McDavid’s McDonald’s bag.
"Lunch. Big Mac," McDavid said.
“Play you for it,” Matthews said.
They agree that the first one to miss has to watch the other eat the Big Mac. The two players then try shots from increasingly difficult angles. At one point, they are transformed into video game characters. The ad ends with both players heading into a McDonald’s for lunch.
The ad with McDavid and Matthews adds a fresh twist with more creative challenges. It was a fun addition to their competitive rivalry, both on and off the ice.
