On July 12, 2024, former NHL player Paul Bissonnette took a break from the ice to try wakesurfing in Wyoming. He shared a video of it on X (formerly Twitter). Wakesurfing involves riding a boat's wake without being directly pulled. Riders start with a tow rope, which they drop once they catch the wave.
Bissonnette's attempt didn't go as smoothly as he hoped. Pro wakesurfer Sam Studee noticed and gave some friendly trolling. The popular Spittin’ Chiclets Memes account posted a video of Studee wakesurfing on Instagram with the caption:
"The next dude up wake surfing after @biznasty bailed 8 times in a row @samstudee."
In the video, Studee wipes out repeatedly, matching Bissonnette's clumsy performance.
Studee joined in on the fun, commenting:
"More hockey & wakesurf content coming soon."
Paul Bissonnette's attempt at wakesurfing may not have been perfect, but it was funny.
This offseason, many hockey players tried wakesurfing for summer fun. In July, Connor McDavid showed impressive control while wakesurfing with fiancée Lauren Kyle. Similarly, Sabres' Rasmus Dahlin also enjoyed wakesurfing in Switzerland with his girlfriend Carolina and friends.
Earlier this year, on April 15, Sam Studee shared a unique wakesurfing video on Instagram. He was wakesurfing on ice skates, using ice boards he crafted at the Minnesota Ice headquarters.
"Wakesurfing 100% Ice Board I went over to the @mn.ice hq saw how they made ice sculptures and shaped two boards out of ice (mostly watching the pros carve the masterpieces). #wakesurfing #surfing #willitsurf," he captioned the video.
Paul Bissonnette talked about the Blue Jackets' under new coach Dean Evason
During his appearance on the "Spittin' Chiclets" podcast on Monday, Paul Bissonnette talked about the Columbus Blue Jackets' new head coach, Dean Evason.
Evason was hired after almost a month-long search for a new coach. Former coach Pascal Vincent was fired on June 17. Bissonnette said the team needed a coach who is both approachable and strict. He believes Evason is a good fit for this role.
"Changing of the guard. " Bissonnette said on Spittin' Chiclets. "I think they needed somebody who, like you said, has that mix between being a players' coach but also a hard-a** and very structured. It's not going to be a country club there, especially to start. They need to reestablish that culture."
Paul Bissonnette praised the new management under GM Don Waddell and Evason, talking about the potential of the team's young players. Bissonnette also mentioned that trading star forward Patrik Laine might be considered to address past issues and improve the team's future.
