Jonas Johansson was the hero for the Colorado Avalanche against the Ottawa Senators. He made a sprawling save on a shot attempt by Alex DeBrincat that kept the puck out of the net as the clock wound down in the third period.

With the goalie pulled and the net empty, the Senators had the man advantage and were looking for a tie. Johansson made save after save before a shot went wide of the net.

A dive put him out of position and DeBrincat was in the right place at the right time. He got the puck off the boards and fired it towards the near-empty net. It seemed like the game would go to overtime but Johansson found his legs, pushed off of the left-hand post, and made a miraculous split save with under three seconds left in the game.

The game was Johansson's second of the season and just his first start. He has only started 25 total games in his NHL career and has struggled to find a foothold in the league. Maybe this save will spark a renaissance in the young goalie's career.

The Colorado Avalanche needed every bit of offense to take down the red-hot Ottawa Senators, who themselves are fighting for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They had goals by Cale Makar, Valeri Nichushkin, Mikko Rantanen, Evan Rodrigues and Lars Eller all before the end of the second period.

The Senators scored two goals in a furious rally by Travis Hamonic and Brady Tkachuk, however, Johansson would play the hero, making the key save as time expired and sending the Avalanche back home with two points.

With the loss, the Senators fell two points behind the Buffalo Sabres and Washington Capitals in the Eastern Conference playoff race. The Avalanche solidified their spot in the Central Division standings and are now five points ahead of the Winnipeg Jets in third place.
