Knights hold off Warriors in Memorial Cup battle

WHL playoff MVP Denton Mateychuk opened the scoring just 3͏:39 ͏into the Memorial Cup ga͏m͏e, snapping a shot over the ͏shoulder of Knights’ goalie͏ Michael Sim͏pson.

However, the Warriors' lead was short-lived. Midway through the frame, London's Ruslan Gazizov capitalized on a Moose Jaw turnover behind their net, beating Warriors’ goalie Jackson Unger to tie it 1-1. Shortly after, Moose Jaw forward Jagger Firkus had a prime opportunity to regain the lead, but Simpson made a spectacular save.

With 2:10 left in the first period, the Knights took the lead as Sam Dickinson fired a shot from the slot past Unger, putting London up 2-1 after 20 minutes.

In the second period, Moose Jaw forward Ethan Semeniuk netted a rebound from a point shot by Aiden Ziprick to tie the game. London's Sam O’Reilly responded almost immediately, roofing a shot over Unger to make it 3-2. The Knights extended their lead to 4-2 when Landon Sim finished off a two-on-one with O’Reilly just as a Warriors powerplay ended. Kasper Halttunen then scored on the powerplay, making it 5-2.

The Warriors struck back just six seconds later, as Semeniuk’s shot from the neutral zone took a fortunate bounce past Simpson, closing the gap to 5-3 through 40 minutes. In the third period, with 3:55 left and Unger pulled for an extra attacker, Martin Rysavy jammed home a loose puck to make it 5-4.
