Sidney Crosby has undoubtedly been one of the best players in the NHL over the past two decades. He is a prolific leader, a three-time Stanley Cup champion and one of the best centers in the game of hockey.
Across his 18-year NHL career, Crosby has seldom had moments where he loses his cool and aggravates a situation, but on Friday night in the game against the LA Kings, 'The Next One' received his career's first game misconduct which automatically ejected him from the game.
Crosby was in front of the net when Anderson pushed him from behind. Anderson got called for cross-checking and as he was heading away, Crosby shoved him. Both players received a 10-minute misconduct penalty. Crosby's ruling was raised to game misconduct, which was an automatic ejection from the game for arguing with referee Garrett Rank.
"Crosby gets crosschecked hard in front of the net by Anderson. As the penalty was being announced, Sid confronted him, getting a 10-minute misconduct. The captain then got a game misconduct for having words with referee Garrett Rank" tweeted @PenInsideScoop
Kings fans loved seeing Crosby get kicked out of the game and bad him farewell with their version of Steam's "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye."
When asked about the incident after the game, Sidney Crosby said he heard Anderson say something. He added that this level of physicality happens a lot and was shocked to hear that he was getting kicked out of the game:
"I could tell he (Anderson) was saying something. I don't know what he was saying because we were pretty far from each other. I got closer and that happens often in a lot of scrums. Honestly, I was shocked that I was getting kicked out of the game. I had no idea."
Sidney Crosby abstained from commenting on how he felt about the referee's decision, citing that he could not say what he was really thinking:
"I mean, can I really say what I think anyway? Let's be honest here"
This was Sidney Crosby's second major infraction
Prior to this incident, Sidney Crosby had been handed a 10-min penalty only four times. The highest PIMs (Penalty Infraction Minutes) Crosby has been subjected was 21 which he received in a game against the Florida Panthers in 2009. He was given an instigator penalty for his fight with Brett McLean.
The Penguins have now lost three of their past five games and sit at No.5 in the Metropolitan Division table. They will be looking for a win against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night.
