Hockey fans reacted to USA defenseman Cole Hutson’s remarks following the United States' 4-1 win over Canada in the World Junior Championship group stage on Tuesday.
Hutson said:
"It feels even better than the Gold Medal Game. … Beating them in their home country. I don't think it gets much better than that."
Fans across social media slammed Hutson's comments, with one tweeting:
"What a muppet this guy is. Needed 12 power plays to beat Canada’s B team."
Another wrote:
"Winning a preliminary game is better than winning the gold? The f**k is this kid talking about?"
Here are some more fan reactions:
"Wrong answer: The correct answer is, it’s nice to get the win in front of their home crowd but our focus is on improving our 5 on 5 play and working to win the gold medal. You don’t need to provide locker room material for the other team. Gloat when it’s over," one wrote.
"Everybody wants to beat the best and they know we are the best," another wrote.
"Better than a gold medal? What are you smoking kid," a user commented.
"Beating Canada is better than the gold metal? Wow, can you say rent free? The goal is to win gold or should be anyway. I hope Lane isn’t this simple," another wrote.
The win secured the top spot in Group A for the USA, leading to a promising quarterfinal clash against Switzerland. Meanwhile, Canada finished third in the group and will face the Czechs in the next round.
Cole Eiserman taunt Canadian bench after his goal in USA win
USA forward Cole Eiserman provided insight into his message to the Canadian bench after a pivotal power-play goal in USA vs Canada. Eiserman's goal at 13:21 of the third period extended the US' lead to 3-1 following a boarding penalty by Canada's Easton Cowan.
As Eiserman celebrated near the opposition bench, he appeared to have some choice words for the Canadians.
"Just probably stuff I shouldn’t say on the mic," Eiserman said post-game when asked about the exchange. "Good fun on the ice, and that stuff doesn’t come off the ice. Just on the ice, I like to be competitive and have fun."
After beating Canada on their home ice, Eiserman said:
"That's something that's storybook-like ... Something that you've dreamt of."
Apart from Eiserman's key goal, the United States got tallies from Danny Nelson, Cole Hutson and Ryan Leonard. Goaltender Trey Augustine stopped 38 shots. Bradley Nadeau scored, while Carter George had 24 stops for Canada.
