On July 12, 2022, Johnny Gaudreau's decision to inform the Calgary Flames that he would not re-sign with the team and wanted to test free agency was a significant development in the NHL. Gaudreau, who had spent his entire NHL career with the Flames, was one of the league's most talented players and a vital part of the Flames' roster.

The reason behind his decision was his baby girl Noa. Back then, however, she hadn't been born yet. Apparently, as a future parent, he was planning for his life with her baby girl around and wanted to secure her future with a better contract. Gaudreau, a highly-skilled forward capable of producing significant offensive numbers, would likely have had no shortage of suitors when he became a free agent.

For the Flames, Gaudreau's departure was a significant loss. The team had struggled, and Gaudreau was one of the few bright spots. His departure left a big hole in the team's forward lines, making it even more difficult for the Flames to compete in a highly-competitive Western Conference.

At the same time, Johnny Gaudreau's decision to test free agency was unsurprising. Many NHL players chose to explore their options as free agents when their contracts expired, and Gaudreau was open about his desire to win a championship.

While he had success with the Flames, the team did not make it past the first round of the playoffs during his tenure. He may have been looking for a fresh start with a team closer to contending for a championship.

On the Spittin' Chiclets podcast, Gaudreau later confirmed that he was very close to signing with the New Jersey Devils. But then, the Columbus Blue Jackets made an offer which he could not resist as he signed a seven-year, $68.25-million contract with them.

Johnny Gaudreau's wife Meredith Morris and their relationship history

Johnny Gaudreau's wife is Meredith Morris. The couple married on August 25, 2018, in a ceremony in New Jersey.

Meredith Morris is originally from Carneys Point, New Jersey, and is a former standout player on the women's ice hockey team at Northeastern University. She graduated from Northeastern in 2016 with a degree in business administration.

Meredith Morris has also played professional hockey, signing with the NWHL's Connecticut Whale in 2016. She played two seasons with the Whale before pursuing other career opportunities.

While Johnny Gaudreau is a well-known NHL player, his wife Meredith Morris tends to keep a low profile and is not as active on social media as her husband. However, the couple have been known to support each other in their respective careers.
