Marchand, a native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, was chosen by Boston in the third round (No. 71) of the 2006 NHL Draft after tallying 66 points (29 goals, 37 assists) in 68 games for Moncton of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

He helped Val-d'Or reach the QMJHL final the following season by scoring 40 points (16 goals, 24 assists) in 20 postseason games and spent the 2007-08 season in the QMJHL with Val-d'Or and Halifax before making the jump to the American Hockey League with Providence.

He was called up by the Bruins early in the 2009-10 season and had an assist in his NHL debut, a 3-2 victory over the Nashville Predators on Oct. 21, 2009, his only point in 20 games for the Red Sox.

Brad Marchand played his first full season in 2010-11, helping the Bruins win the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1972. He scored 41 points (21 goals, 20 assists) in 77 regular-season games before becoming a key player in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

He finished with 19 points and 11 goals in 25 games, a rookie playoff record for the Bruins and had two goals and an assist in a 4-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final.

He had a breakout season in 2015-16, scoring 37 goals, which ranked sixth in the NHL, and leading the Bruins with a plus-21 rating. He led the Bruins in the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs with 23 points (nine goals, 14 assists) in 24 games, helping them advance to the Cup Final, where they were defeated in seven games by the St. Louis Blues.
