Alex Ovechkin has scored 40 or more goals in a season 13 times.

Alex Ovechkin broke another record in the NHL by scoring his 40th goal of the season in a game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. With this achievement, Ovechkin has now scored 40 or more goals in a season 13 times, surpassing the previous record of 12 held by the legendary Wayne Gretzky.

The Washington Capitals held a pre-game ceremony in honor of Ovechkin’s historic achievement, during which he received a special gift from the organization, the National Hockey League, the National Hockey League Players’ Association, and his teammates. Capitals players wore #8 on their jerseys for warmups, which will be signed and auctioned off by the Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation at a later date.

In addition to the pre-game ceremony, fans were also given cutouts of Ovechkin’s image to celebrate his milestone. An Ovechkin-themed throne, made up of more than 802 hockey pucks, was also set up on the 100-level concourse, along with a photobooth featuring Ovechkin-themed props.

Despite all the celebrations and history, the Caps lost the game 7-6 in overtime to the NHL-worst Columbus Blue Jackets. Nonetheless, Ovechkin’s accomplishment is a significant achievement, as he continues to climb up the all-time goal-scoring list. With his 820th career goals, Ovechkin is only 75 goals away from breaking Gretzky’s record of 894 goals, which has long seemed unbreakable.

Ovechkin has been a dominant force in the NHL since entering the league in 2005, and he has consistently been among the league’s top goal scorers. His 13 seasons with 40 or more goals is a testament to his exceptional talent and consistency on the ice. As he continues to play at a high level, there is no doubt that he will continue to set records and cement his place in NHL history.
