Luke Evangelista's parents, Andrew and Margaret, were in attendance at Bridgestone Arena last Tuesday to watch their 21-year-old son make his NHL debut with the Nashville Predators. His parents, who traveled almost 800 miles from Toronto to Nashville, were joined by Luke's sisters, Maria and Sophia, as well as other family members and friends. They erupted in cheers as Luke stepped out onto the ice.
According to his parents, Luke's love for hockey began when he was four years old and only grew stronger from there. He never complained about early morning practices or extra workouts, and instead took every opportunity he could to improve his skills as a player.
In 2020, the Nashville Predators drafted Luke 42nd overall, and his parents could not have been more thrilled to see their son's dream become a reality.
"He's been working towards this dream for probably 16 years now. To see it come to fruition at this moment really makes you think back on all the people that have helped him get here," Margaret Evangelista said.
Luke's path to the NHL has been marked by highs and lows. In his first season with the Ontario Hockey League's London Knights, he recorded just two points through 27 appearances. However, the following season, he performed at a near-point-per-game pace and recorded 61 points through 62 contests.
The season after that, he led the OHL in goals and his club in goals, assists, points, and plus-minus. He became the 21st skater in franchise history to net 50 goals in a single season and received a nod to the league's 2021-22 Second All-Star Team.
Before his call-up to Nashville, Luke led the Milwaukee Admirals in points with 41 and all-American Hockey League rookies in assists. His impressive offensive production earned him a nod to his first AHL All-Star Classic alongside teammates Tommy Novak and Yaroslav Askarov.
Luke's parents have been his biggest supporters throughout his hockey career, and they expect him to continue to excel in the NHL. "He loves it here, so it's a great start," Andrew Evangelista said. With Luke's passion and dedication to the game, it's clear that his journey is far from over.
