It has been 10 years since the New Jersey Devils chanted the name of Martin Brodeur, and now they're chanting for his son: Jeremy Brodeur. The New Jersey goalie had a great preseason game, prompting fans to once again cheer the name they once held so dearly.
The elder Brodeur played 21 out of his 22 NHL seasons with the Devils. He was a longtime fan favorite and entered the Hall of Fame in 2018. Brodeur was a three-time cup winner, seven-time All-Star, and much more.
His son is in the NHL for the first time, and he's playing for the Devils as well. Brodeur spent time with the Adirondack Thunder in the ECHL while under contract with the Utica Comets of the AHL.
The younger Brodeur made his preseason debut on Monday and arguably lived up to his name. He is 6-foot-1 and 27 years old. He also has another brother who plays hockey, Anthony, who was drafted by the Devils in the seventh round of the 2013 NHL Draft.
A third Brodeur son, William, also played hockey. At 28 years old, he has already retired from the sport professionally. Jeremy remains the only active player in the NHL from the family.
Jeremy Brodeur makes the most of NHL opportunity
Much of the main New Jersey Devils lineup was in Prague last night, so the Devils sported a bit of a backup squad for their preseason game against the New York Rangers. That allowed Jeremy Brodeur to get some time in goal.
Brodeur may not have been on the radar much, but he is now. He helped guide the team to a terrific 3-1 victory with a few stunning saves. In total, he made 29 saves and the team only allowed one goal.
The Devils have two more games before the preseason ends on Thursday, five days before the NHL regular season begins. Brodeur may have played his way into more opportunities and could be a player to watch for the Devils moving forward. If nothing else, it gives fans a chance to reminisce about his father's tenure with the team.
